The National Centre of Science, Information and Communication Technology and Mathematics Education for Rural and Regional Australia (SiMERR Australia) was established at the University of New England in July 2004 through a federal government grant.
SiMERR
Australia aims to provide a national forum for addressing
issues relating to the key areas of science, ICT and mathematics
education, particularly as they concern rural and regional
communities. The NT SiMERR Hub is one of seven state hubs.
It is located at Charles Darwin University and involves staff
from the Northern Territory Department of Employment Education
and Training (NTDEET) in a collaborative activity. The Hub
is supported by a team of researchers and professionals with
extensive experience in science, ICT and mathematics education,
expertise in many areas of student diversity. Through a combination
of strategic research, network building and practical support,
the NT SiMERR Hub aims to identify the needs of geographically
and professionally isolated teachers, and enhance their efforts
to assist students to realize their academic potential in
these subject areas.
The NT Hub Team is working to establish
links with teachers, education providers and relevant professional
and community organizations to identify research opportunities
and priorities. The NT Hub is also involved in the Issues
in the National survey: "Teaching and Learning Science,
ICT, and Mathematics in Rural and Regional Australia:. This
project aims to obtain high quality base-line data that will
inform actions to improve educational practices and outcomes
in Science, ICT, and Mathematics in rural and regional Australia.
In particular, the NT component of the study identifies:
· The key issues facing NT teachers of Science, ICT, and Mathematics,
and
· The professional development needs of the teachers of these subjects
that will enable them to offer an improved educational environment for their
students.
